Proficiency Exam Information
The exam is worth 350 points. To pass the exam and receive credit for the
course, you must earn 73.5% (257 points) or better on the exam and
score 50% or better on each component. You will not receive a letter grade for
the course. If you sign up for, take, and pass this exam you will receive 3
hours of Pass credit for the course on your transcript. If you do not pass this
exam, it will not go on your permanent record. You will still be enrolled in
the course.
Windows Explorer and Written Section (50 points)
Using Windows Explorer you should be able to format a disk, copy files, change
names of files, create folders and copy files to a folder.
The written section will consist of True/False, Multiple Choice,Short Answer,
and Listing questions. The information will be from the Computer Concepts book,
as well as basic concept ideas from the various software programs.
MS Word 2003 (75 points)
You will create several documents with Word. You should know how to change
margins, tabs, headers/footers, line spacing, page numbering,
appearance/location of text including:
bold, underline, italics, size, center page, date, indent, etc...
You should be familiar with how to create a merged document (using a form file
and a data file).
Knowledge of graphics, borders, tables and columns will also be necessary.
MS Excel 2003 (75 points)
With Excel, you will make a spreadsheet using formulas and functions. Functions
to know include: Sum, Average, Max, Min, Count, If, Date and Now. You should
know how to fill in a range with values. You will be expected to "dress
up" this spreadsheet (bold, color, shading, lines, alignment, etc.) You
will need to know how to sort data. You will be asked to create charts and
change default settings of charts. You need to be familiar with how to setup an
Advanced (not Auto) Filter.
MS Access 2003(75 points)
Here you will be asked to create a database table and enter records. Using this
and other tables, you should know how to create forms, subforms, queries,
reports and relationships. You will also be asked to sort. You should be
familiar with the different types of queries i.e. queries that have more than
one criteria and queries that do calculations and functions.
MS Power Point 2003 (75 points)
In Power Point you will be creating a timed slide presentation with custom
animation (including changing the color of bullets) and transitions. You should
know how to make slides with text, data, charts and graphics. Changing default
setting of slides (backgrounds, fonts, colors, etc.) and graphics will also be
included.
